It is an expectation that all staff will report if the status of their criminal record and child abuse checks may have or has changed.  They must report this change to the Superintendent immediately.

Staff

When employees are offered a job, they must complete both a criminal record check and a child abuse registry check.  The child abuse check is done through the Border Land School Division Office and paid for by the division.  Criminal Record checks are done through the police department and are paid for by the potential employee.

All efforts must be made to ensure checks are completed prior to the commencement of work.  In exceptional circumstances where due to the timing of a hiring, checks have been submitted but are not yet returned, staff can commence working pending the signing of a voluntary declaration form.

Each fall, a voluntary offense declaration will be filled out to indicate whether or not an individual’s record has changed.

Volunteers

Anyone volunteering in a school where they will be alone with children or with an activity that is school sanctioned (driving students etc.) must complete their child abuse and criminal record checks.  There is no charge for these checks if they stipulate it is for volunteering.

Complete checks must be done every 4 years.  Each fall, in years 2 and 3, a voluntary offense declaration will be filled out to indicate whether or not an individual’s record has changed.

Schools will communicate, each spring that all checks must be completed, in their entirety, before any volunteering can commence the next school year.

Evidence of a Charge

If any checks return with a charge, Border Land School Division Senior Administration will determine whether or not action needs to be taken, and if required, will follow through on the action.
