Border Land School Division shall endeavor to recruit the best-qualified and most appropriate persons for all Divisional positions.  The Division believes that every person has the right to equal opportunity based upon bona fide qualification (with respect to employment), employment advancement and promotion.

 

The appropriate senior leadership team member shall coordinate support staff hiring.  The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for the recruitment of librarians. The Student Services Manager is responsible for the recruitment of educational assistants. The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for the recruitment of bus drivers, custodians, or any other staff related to transportation or maintenance, and office support staff. The Superintendent may be involved in this process at his/her discretion.

 

When support staff positions become available, they will be posted internally This will be prior to or concurrent with external advertising, depending on the circumstances of the vacancy.  In the situation where staffing is related to the education of students, continuity of programming will be the primary consideration.  In the event that any initial posting or advertisement does not generate suitable candidates, the Division may re-post or re-advertise the position.

 

All applicants will be given due consideration.  The senior leadership team member responsible for the staffing area, in consultation with the principal of the school (and the resource teacher in the case of educational assistants), will develop a short-list of candidates for a given position. Suitability of candidates will be based on academic qualifications, experience, and information obtained from an employment interview and references.  Current minimum standards include:

  • High school diploma for educational assistants.
  • Class two drivers license and a bus driver’s certificate, subject to 24 hours of training for bus drivers.
  • 5th class power engineer certificate for custodians working with steam filled boilers.
  • Experience and demonstrated expertise in the area being advertised.

 

Employment Interviews will be arranged for those short-listed for the position. 

 

An interview panel consisting of the designated senior leadership team member, school administrator or coordinator, resource teacher (in the case of an educational assistant), or other approved panel member will recommend a candidate for the position subsequent to the interview and reference checks being completed

 

The successful candidate will be informed that employment is subject to divisional policy regarding completion of the criminal record check and the child abuse registry check.  The individual will be required to have the results of these checks forwarded to the Division office.

 

The recommendation for employment, with a rationale regarding the choice, will be presented to the Board for ratification.

 

All candidates involved in the interview process will be notified following the selection process.

 

After the Board ratification, the Superintendent will send a letter that informs the successful candidate.

 

Applications will remain in the active file for a period of one (1) year.  Candidates who wish to renew their applications shall inform the appropriate senior leadership team member.
