Intellectual freedom in the classroom is of great importance in a democratic society.  Teachers must be free to explore ideas, to have meaningful discussions and to lead students in the development of skills needed in our society.  This will develop skills, critical thinking, and attitudes necessary for making improved evaluations and judgements.  However, it is also true that complete freedom seldom exists, even in educational systems.  Therefore, it is important to know and understand any limitations that may exist and what procedures to follow if problems arise in the Border Land School Division.  The following two points should be considered:

  • The moral values of the community shall be respected in the presentation and interpretation of facts and ideas about people, society, the physical world, and other material, when presented to students.

  • Controversy about any aspect of intellectual freedom, whether concerned with literary content or classroom expression, shall be dealt with through the Selection of Learning Resources section.

Border Land School Division

Border Land School Division acknowledges that the communities and schools located within Border Land School Division sit on Treaty 1 and Treaty 3 land, the original lands of the Anishinaabe peoples and on the homeland of the Métis Nation.

Border Land School Division respects the treaties that were made on these treaty areas and we dedicate ourselves to moving forward in partnership with our Indigenous communities in a spirit of truth, reconciliation and collaboration.
