Border Land School Division believes in lifelong learning for both staff and students. As such, Border Land School Division offers a Summer Institute in late August to provide foundational learning opportunities for staff. Summer Institute session topics are based on divisional and provincial priorities and the learning needs of staff.
Attendance at Summer Institute is voluntary. Registration for Summer Institute sessions will occur in June. Registrations must be approved by the principal.
Teachers who attend or facilitate professional learning at Summer Institute may claim days in lieu during the school year equal to the number of days that they attended. Time in lieu for partial days is not granted. Principals need to approve the date during the school year for the day in lieu.
As per article 6.05 of the Provincial Collective Agreement, Principals and Vice Principals are not eligible for days in lieu for their attendance at division directed professional development during the summer break.
Attendance at another any other professional development in the summer must be approved by the school division.
If there is a session that is targeted for support staff and a school principal identifies that they should attend, they will be paid the regular full time school day hours to attend for each day and will not be granted a day in lieu.
Mileage for attending these sessions is reimbursed at the PD mileage rate. Staff driving to and from Ross L Gray can claim mileage and accommodation costs at the PD rate.
Report of absence forms will be issued at each session to participants in attendance.
