Orange Shirt Day 2019

WC Miller Collegiate Holds First Orange Shirt Day
First Official Orange Shirt Day in WC Miller Collegiate - 2019

W. C. Miller Collegiate held its first official Orange Shirt Day on Monday, September 30th.  An assembly started the day with a video in which Phyllis Webstad told her story explaining the origin of the day, and with guests from Roseau River First Nation sharing parts of their culture and traditions. This included drumming and dancing from an accomplished group of performers. As well, Elder Peter Atkinson shared his residential school experience and left us with a challenge to carefully consider the meaning of reconciliation. At the end of the assembly, students were invited to speak with the drummers, to chat with the dancers, and get a closer look at their traditional dress. We ended with a large group photo of everyone wearing orange.  It was a great start to what we hope will be an annual event.
